SWAND Candle Care FAQ

Q1: I already take care of my candles. Why do I need a SWAND®?
A: Because the four things a candle actually needs are usually four separate objects — or nothing at all. SWAND® brings them into one: the Wick Snapper, the Wick Dipper, the Wax Spoon and the Dome Snuffer. Snap. Dip. Spoon. Snuff. We call it Swanding. Your candles burn cleaner, throw more scent, and last longer — and the tool that does it is beautiful enough to leave out beside them.

Q2: How is SWAND® different from a candle care set?
A: Most sets are three loose tools rattling in a box. SWAND® is The Original 4-in-1 Candle Care Tool — a patented design, protected in the US and abroad — with four functions in one sculptural object. It also carries a wax spoon, which standard sets leave out entirely.

Q3: What is the Wick Snapper, and why doesn't it cut?
A: It snaps rather than cuts — no scissors, no blades. After a burn, once the wick has cooled and hardened, place the V-shaped cutout beneath the mushroomed bloom, then twist to snap the burnt tip away and glide up to lift the carbon bloom. Two motions, one cutout. It's the wick trimmer reinvented: because it works on hardened carbon rather than soft fibre, it needs a wick that has already burned, not a fresh one.

Q4: How short should my wick be, and how often?
A: ⅛ to ¼ inch, depending on the candle, and before every burn. A long or blooming wick is what makes a flame smoke, soot and flicker.

Q5: Does the Wick Snapper work on every wick?
A: It works on all hardened, brittle wicks — including wood wicks. Silky, thin wicks are the one exception: SWAND® lifts their bloom, but shortening them still calls for scissors.

Q6: What is the Wax Spoon, and what does it do?
A: It's the tool no candle drawer has. The Wax Spoon rebalances wax levels and remedies tunneling — rescuing candles you thought were lost. It also doubles as a smoke-free way to end a burn, and lifts debris out of the melt pool to keep the wax clean.

Q7: What is candle tunneling, and how does SWAND® fix it?
A: Tunneling is when a candle burns straight down the centre and leaves a wall of unmelted wax around the edge. Every inch of that wall is scent and burn time you paid for. With the Wax Spoon, swirl the hot wax and gently draw the climbing wax down from the vessel's sides into the melt pool, distributing it evenly around the wick. Do it while the wax is liquid.

Q8: What does the Wick Dipper do?
A: It puts a flame to rest without smoke. Holding the dome end, use the spoon end to submerge the lit wick into the pooled wax, then nudge it back to centre. No smoke, no fumes — and the wick is coated in wax, which conditions it for an easier next light. A slight bend in the wick also helps prevent future blooms.

Q9: What makes the Dome Snuffer different from an ordinary snuffer?
A: It ends the burn cleanly — no smoke, no splatter, no wax on your walls — and it works on every flame, from tapers to wood wicks. Hold the neck, lower the dome over the flame, and pause. It also doubles as a stand, so SWAND® sits upright beside your candle rather than lying in a drawer.

Q10: Can SWAND® reduce smoke and soot?
A: Yes. All three of the Snapper, the Dipper and the Dome Snuffer work against smoke — the Snapper by removing the carbon bloom before you light, the Dipper and the Snuffer by ending the burn without a smoke trail.

Q11: Will SWAND® work with my candles?
A: From tapers to deep jar candles, pillars and votives — whatever the wick, one tool cares for them all. The Wax Spoon works on any wax: soy, paraffin, beeswax, coconut, bamboo and blends.

Q12: What is SWAND® made of?
A: Post-consumer stainless steel, hand-shaped and hand-polished, so the finish is unique to every piece. Queen carries a titanium gold surface finish; Raven a matte black powder coat. It weighs 43 g — the weight is part of the design. We design for the senses first: the balance, and the cool of polished steel. SWAND® is made to be picked up, not only looked at.

Q13: How does SWAND® arrive, and is the packaging recyclable?
A: It arrives in a plastic-free, gift-ready FSC-certified recycled box with a magnetic closure — no wrapping required, and nothing to tear or discard. Curbside recyclable and compostable. We take a closed-loop approach to product design: made to last, recyclable at end of life. Post-consumer stainless steel; plastic-free, FSC-certified board. Designed for a closed-loop future.

Q14: How do I clean my SWAND®?
A: Clean it whenever the wax builds up — there's no schedule to keep. Swirl each end in a cup of hot water and the wax and light soot release on their own. Wipe with a soft cloth and dry thoroughly. For stubborn black marks, make a paste of baking soda and warm water, rub gently with a soft cloth, rinse and dry. Skip scouring pads, harsh cleaners and the dishwasher — they can dull the finish. Cared for this way, your SWAND® is an heirloom piece.

Q15: Is SWAND® patented?
A: Yes. SWAND® is a patented design, with design rights in four jurisdictions — the United States, the European Union, the Republic of Korea and China.

Q16: Who makes SWAND®, and what does my purchase support?
A: SWAND® is woman-owned and women-designed. Founded and invented by Susan Nichols. We donate 5% of net profits annually to Women for Women International, supporting women survivors of war as they rebuild their lives. Because the flame we tend is never just our own.

Q17: What about shipping and returns?
A: Free standard shipping on every US order — no code, no minimum — from our California warehouse. Outside the US, SWAND® ships worldwide through our Amazon storefront. All sales are final, but if your SWAND® arrives damaged or defective we'll replace it: email care@swand.com within 7 days of delivery with your order number and a photo, and there's no need to ship anything back unless we ask.
